Oil Cleansing

Oil cleansing is basically washing your face with a mix of oils. If you've never heard of oil cleansing, you might be confused about why such things might exist. "I have oily skin so why would I want to wash my face with oils?" is the most common question people ask when they first hear about oil cleansing. However, it's not as bad as it sounds.

I'm sure you've heard the phrase "like dissolves like" if you've taken a chemistry or biology course before. To simply put, oils dissolve other oil-based things, water dissolves other water-based things. And this is the same reason why oil and water don't mix together. Therefore, oil cleansing is extremely effective at removing all oil-based debris such as excess sebum, makeup, and sunscreen, that a water-based cleanser wouldn't be able to effectively remove. You might be wondering how one might wash the oil off with water if they don't mix together... and the answer is, oil cleansers have surfactants in them which allow them to be washed away when water is used. This is why you might not want to just grab oils in the kitchen and use it as a cleanser; it will not wash off with water without the added surfactants.

In addition to oil cleansing, many people do something called double cleansing which is when you first use an oil cleanser, wash it off, then go in with a second water-based cleanser and wash it off. This is what I do every day and it's extremely effective at removing most of the impurities that may have built up on your face throughout the day. Washing off all of the impurities on your face ensures that the ingredients in your nighttime skin care routine effectively absorb into your skin.

Here are my two favorite oil cleansers:

  1. I love coming to your blog and reading all tips on skincare. I never knew about oil cleansing and my first reaction was "Why would you want to wash your face with oils when your skin is already oily?" And you answered it! I think I might give oil cleansing a try and see if I notice a difference between using an oil cleanser and regular face wash.

  2. I am oil skin and I really need to know how to choose a good cleanser to help me deeply clean up my face. Your post give me a lot of tips about facial cleaning. I often use the cleanser from Kielh's and Shisedoo. Their cleansers were more direct to oil skin customers and those two cleansers were most the best cleanser I ever used.
